  • Sketching

This client was referred to me by a mutual friend. The concept was for an iPhone 11 phone case of Haru Okumura, a playable character from Persona 5. He was looking for a kind of sultry but badass look on this character and a pose that he couldn’t find online, especially not as a case design. The image below is the sketched version and the fully rendered version prior to production.

  • Coloring

Over the course of any collab or commission process, I have multiple check-ins with the client to see if anything needs to be altered. Usually there’s a check in for pose types, then one about flat color, and then background/ pre-rendering and details. This image shows background ideas for the phone case.

  • finishing

I enjoyed working with the client in this project, as it was my first time designing for a product that wasn’t a print, sticker or button. The colors were adjusted before the final version was sent to the client for production. The phone case is for personal use.

personal chibis

Client: JAE AII THA SOLCHYLD (S0!0) @thasolscientist777

James, or JAE AII THA SOLCHYLD is an aspiring rapper who wanted me to make chibi versions of him and his friends in both casual wear and formal wear. The project was for personal use but would eventually be used as the face/profile picture of his brand.

what are chibis?

Chibi is a Japanese term for a kind of cartoon style which includes stunted or childlike FEATURES, such as a large head and smaller, usually more stout limbs.

The term itself is a slang for “something short” and translates to “brat” or “shorty,” referencing the child-like proportions. in anime, this kind of style is for storylines that are spin-offs of the main show, or for innocent, less complex plots.

The client’s desired color theme was primary colors in a professional and mature light. The image to the right was a concept compilation of both summer and fall (casual and formal, respectively) that I had originally planned for the client. we turned into a different direction from modern aesthetics to a more retro/ old school rap look.

  • Casual

The style we ended up going for was a classic 90s street style look.

  • formal 1

Instead of a casual semi-formal look for the Fall Line, we opted for complete formal look.

  • Formal 2

Same formal wear, except with hats! Keeping the primary colors while also working with a uniform look was most challenging.

  • Concept

I’ve always wanted to help design characters on VANS for fun. The characters shown above are from different shows, one shoe features Goku from Dragon Ball Z, and the other shoe is Naruto and Sasuke from Naruto Shippuden.

  • challenges

It was my first-time customizing shoes. I used a transfer method from parchment paper onto the canvas shoe but ended up using a loose grid and eyeballing the work with an 7H graphite pencil before going in with ink and paint. The dried paint was sealed with layers of modge podge.

While it wasn’t my first time working with acrylics or traditional media, it was my first time customizing shoes.

About halfway through the process, I got worried about how the colors would match up in comparison to the given reference photos online. I went with my gut because there wasn’t exactly a logical way to go about this (thank goodness for an art and design major).

It was a very busy week with my other jobs and trying to find a day when I could ship the finished product in time. The night before shipment, I took photos in my kitchen using a large sheet of white construction paper underneath the shoes. Post-production edits took about as long as the staging.
