what is biomimicry?

A little more directly inspired by flora and fauna, biomimicry is taking elements or aesthetics from animals or plants. In this project, my professor assigned students to pick a kind of audience and create a chair inspired from any animal, as long as it wasn’t too literal.

  • To create a modern and interesting chair that combines both the foldable round chair with the bean bag and borrowing aspects from nature and culture into an art piece that is both functional and aesthetic for audiences who will appreciate it.

  • The colorful options of this chair and the thought put into its structure would be appreciated by gamers, college students, interior designers, art enthusiasts.

  • Adobe Photohop/Illustrator

any animal—

existing or

extinct?

The dunkleosteus was known for it’s armored plates, something i was looking for in my bioinspired furniture.

I went through a handful of concept sketches, but these were the main four that made the semi- finals. The rendered or final approved sketch had a simple structure and would come in multiple colors. Due to its colorful and comfortable design, the target audience would be for the younger crowd, especially college students and/or gamers. As a college student myself back then, I was sick and tired of the bean bag, but didn’t completely enjoy the shape and lack of framing support from your average bowl/round chair. The chair is lower to the floor but good for the height in which most people would place their TV for gaming (this included my roommate at the time) and allowed for the perfect fitting of where the legs would bend, and where feet would plant on the floor.

Below is the gallery of images detailing the process of how the chair would be made, from the environmentally conscious framing design to the anatomy of parts for the furniture.
